Homework Kindergarten

Homework Kindergarten-7
I asked his teacher at his conference this week for suggestions on how to do it.I thought that would be a question she gets a lot, but surprisingly she just kind of shrugged and said that with her three boys, she just "found a routine that worked for her family."Is this normal in kindergarten?

There have been once or twice where I've sent a note in about a particular assignment "Billy worked hard on this for x minutes and did his best, but became very frustrated so we made the decision to let it go and practice more another time." The feedback I've gotten from the teacher is that's just fine and she does NOT want to push them past the point of frustration. I am very anti-homework but that's what we receive and I think it is totally reasonable. I really like the idea of focusing less on the traditional homework and more on edutainment stuff that also reinforces family bonding.

Last night, I was redirecting my son to complete his homework (as it was all due today) and there was a point where he was burnt out and a teardrop splashed onto the sheet of homework.

They will start introducing homework in 5th grade, so they’re ready when they hit middle school. Can you share any reputable sources on this, please?

I don’t really have any stats on how it’s worked so far, but I can say personally with my son, he tests a grade above in most areas. I'd like to research this more.edit: considering the downvote, I wanted to clarify I wanted more information not because I doubt what /u/tropicalstream is saying but because I don't feel like homework in kindergarten is beneficial, so my belief falls in line with those homework policies.

He was tired and I should have noticed much sooner that it just wasn't benefitting him anymore.

We had a snuggle and then I finished the rest of the homework for him after he went to bed. While I am against homework for kindergartners (and all elementary, actually) the homework he receives does not bother me.It is designed to take no more than about 15 minutes per night, and that's been my experience of what it does take us in reality. One might be sight word flashcards, the other might be a counting game they do called pocket math. That is going to make him hate school before he’s even really started. That is educational and done in a way that doesn't even feel like learning.Stuff like putting one pumpkin on top of another pumpkin to see how much weight is added to the scale - that is all stuff that is in line with what he's learning except not on sheets of paper that have been scanned from a workbook. I saw something similar to that which seems to be based on the same study here which says kids should complete 10-20 minutes of homework beginning first grade, then an additional 10 minutes per grade level. We should also be reading every night but are unable to do so because of all of the rest of the homework he has.Last night, I went through the folder he takes home from school and she sent home 2 pages of classwork and a math test with a note "Jordan was unable to complete these in the allotted time given in class. How did/do you balance homework after your child has been at school all day? Kindergarten is learn thru play and let's be honest, is a slightly more structured and academically educational version of daycare centers. You should read to kid everynight and make regular day to day things a learning opportunity but sheets and such for homework is ridiculous. Now she is sending home classwork he didn't finish to complete at home as well.I feel overwhelmed trying to maintain a good school/life balance for him and he's only in kindergarten!
